Toyota Australia has introduced an innovative Toyota Genuine part designed to significantly reduce service times on constant velocity (CV) joint boot replacement.

Toyota Australia, Australia's top-selling vehicle manufacturer, is the first company to introduce the technology to this country as a Genuine replacement part.

The technology has been tried and tested over the last 10 years in Japan, where Toyota now fits over 400,000 units per year.

The new Toyota Genuine split boot allows technicians to replace the original protective rubber boot while leaving all other vehicle parts in place.

As a result, labour time can be reduced from an industry standard of two-and-a-half hours to less than 30 minutes.

Replacing the driveshaft boot is traditionally a labour-intensive process which requires removal of the wheel, suspension components and entire drive shaft to enable fitting of the new boot.

The boot matches original equipment quality and durability, with the addition of an innovative metal-reinforced joint so that it can be easily secured over the CV joint - without necessitating the removal of any other parts.

"The market-leading Toyota Genuine split boot is an important innovation, making boot replacement a much easier and quicker job," said Matthew Callachor, Toyota Australia's divisional manager of customer services.

"It's a real benefit to service workshops and their Toyota customers, as vehicles spend significantly less time off the road when a CV joint boot requires attention.

"Workshops will save on labour time and resources, increasing their capacity to service more vehicles, and Toyota owners will have their vehicles back on the road sooner," Mr Callachor said.

Each split boot kit includes easy-application CV joint grease, boot lubricant and two clamps to secure the boot to the drive shaft.

Mr Callachor said simplified fitment of boots paves the way for regular preventative maintenance on CV joints, to prolong the life of these notoriously expensive-to-fix parts.

"For example, in country areas, many mining and civil engineering companies send their Toyota fleet vehicles for boot servicing as frequently as every 5000km.

"In the extremely harsh and dry environments in which these companies operate, dust and dirt invariably penetrate the boot, placing stress on the mechanism of the CV joint.

"By requesting that their service provider uses split boots instead of conventional boots, companies across Australia can ensure more efficient management of fleet vehicles," Mr Callachor said.

He said private owners of Toyotas embarking on road trips should consider packing split boot kits with other DIY vehicle repair parts and tools as a precaution to the possibility of experiencing CV joint problems in remote areas.
