TRUECORE® STEEL REDUCES TIME, COST FOR SYDNEY HOTEL DEVELOPMENT
TRUECORE® steel framing made by BlueScope has proven integral to the construction of time- and cost-efficient bathroom fittings in a Sydney building redevelopment, while also contributing to its high quality fit-out and superior fire safety rating.
Mittagong, New South Wales-based steel-framing fabricator Aus-Truss was commissioned by the owner of the former Newtown RSL club to develop the premises into a boutique hotel.
The work involved a complete internal redevelopment while retaining the building's external walls.
Termite and borer-proof TRUECORE® steel framing was used for the 2.4 x 2.7-metre bathroom 'pods' for each of the hotel's rooms.
The pods, which were prefabricated at Aus-Truss' headquarters, comprise a TRUECORE® steel frame with internal tiling and shower screens.
They were transported and fixed to the Newtown building's steel flooring with provisions for the connection of plumbing and electricity services to be carried out on site.
Aus-Truss managing director Andrew Fowler said BlueScope building products have been a mainstay for his business for many years and that the high tensile strength of TRUECORE® steel has enabled his business to create new steel framing solutions.
"We've been using high-strength BlueScope steel for 11 years and the latest G550 megapascal TRUECORE® steel is the highest product strength yet. It's a quality product that has allowed us to develop new applications and break into new markets.
"The TRUECORE® steel bathroom pods provide time- and money-saving benefits while giving the building a rigid, durable and high-quality bathroom fit-out.
"The pods are fire-rated compartments that fully comply with Australian Standards and the Building Code of Australia," Mr Fowler said.
TRUECORE® steel is pre-cut and pre-fabricated, resulting in minimal impact on the building site, and it is 100 per cent recyclable.
"The walling system incorporating TRUECORE® steel framing has passed Australian Standards acoustics testing with flying colours," Mr Fowler said, with the addition of insulation helping to reduce the impact of ambient noise
TRUECORE® steel is designed, engineered and made in Australia for local conditions and backed by BlueScope's 50-year warranty, for additional customer peace of mind.
BlueScope products other than TRUECORE® steel were also used in the Newtown building's redevelopment, including for the floor joists, rafters and new roofing.
"C purlins made from GALVASPAN® steel for example are a very effective product for construction in many different applications, including concrete for flooring systems because they are lighter, stiffer and far easier to work with onsite than traditional materials," Mr Fowler added.
