LEXUS LAUNCHES NEW FLAGSHIP LS SEDAN


The all-new Lexus LS flagship sedan, launched in Australia today, delivers premium levels of powertrain smoothness, spaciousness, handling, ride comfort, safety, craftsmanship and attention to detail.

The fifth-generation LS is based on a new rear-drive platform and features a bold design with a coupe-like silhouette.

Two powertrains are offered, including the first turbocharged petrol engine offered in the LS and the first 10-speed transmission in the segment.

The powertrains are 310kW twin-turbo V6 LS 500 and multi-stage hybrid system LS 500h (combining V6 petrol and electric power for a maximum 264kW).

Pricing is identical for LS 500 and LS 500h, beginning at $190,500 for F Sport, with a $5000 premium for Sports Luxury. There are eight premium hand-crafted interior ornamentation options for Sports Luxury models, four of which command a premium of $9,880.

Lexus also expanded the customer care for which it is renowned, announcing an unconditional 10-year complimentary roadside assistance program to make ownership even easier and more beneficial.

Lexus Australia chief executive Scott Thompson said the new LS 500 draws on the proud history of its predecessors.

"The new Lexus flagship is destined to repeat LS history as a car that redefines and advances automotive luxury expectations and customer satisfaction," he said.

"With multiple world and Lexus firsts, it breaks new ground in design, technology and performance. More than any other model, the LS embodies the history and image of Lexus and serves as a symbol for everything the brands represents - a luxury lifestyle brand that offers amazing experiences."

Mr Thompson said Japanese aesthetics, drawing on the skills of master craftsmen and the "omotenashi" or hospitality principle, reflected the human-centred engineering and attention to detail inherent with the Lexus brand.

"This human touch gives the Lexus brand its soul and sets it apart from our competitors," he said.

LS chief engineer Toshio Asahi said the challenge for Lexus with the fifth-generation model was not simply to go beyond the achievements of the past, but to re-imagine what a global flagship sedan should be.

"In doing so, four key pillars underpinned the development of the new LS - brave design, Takumi craftsmanship, exhilarating performance and imaginative technology," he said.

Foundation for the new design and chassis was the GA-L platform that allowed Lexus to extend the wheelbase, provide a spacious interior, and achieve an ideal front-rear weight balance and the lowest centre of gravity in class for greater agility and comfort.

The latest Lexus Safety System+ includes a pre-collision system, all-speed radar active cruise control, lane keep assist and adaptive high-beam system to control the LED headlamps.

Every Lexus LS is equipped with blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, pop-up bonnet and tyre pressure monitoring system.

Advanced new front and rear seat designs offer class-leading levels of adjustment and sophisticated new massage functions.

In-cabin technology includes a 12.3-inch multi-media screen, head-up display with segment-leading size, Mark Levinson 23-speaker audio and auto-closing doors.

Performance benefits include standard Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM), air suspension with access mode control and adaptive variable suspension.

LS 500 F Sport is the outright performance model, equipped with the V6 turbo, a world-first six-step VDIM system, four-wheel steering and active stabiliser bars to provide an even higher level of stability control while maintaining ride comfort.

F Sport features include unique exterior and interior treatments, 20-inch alloys with a front-rear tyre size differential, high-performance brakes, variable gear-ratio steering, dynamic rear steering and active stabiliser bars.

Sports Luxury additional features include four-zone climate control with rear cooler, 22-way power rear seats with passenger-side ottoman and seven massage programs, rear-seat entertainment and noise-dissipating 20-inch alloy wheels.

LEXUS LS: BRAVE DESIGN FOR NEW LEXUS FLAGSHIP


The new Lexus LS flagship sedan adopts a coupe-like silhouette and the brand's first six-window sedan profile. It is a modern design with traditional Japanese aesthetics.

Underpinning the design is the new GA-L platform, which offers new levels of spaciousness, coupled with an even higher level of agility and comfort.

The first application of this platform was the premium rear-drive Lexus LC 500 sports coupe and the platform was lengthened to suit LS sedan.

Lexus designers took full advantage of the scope offer by the new platform, including its low profile and length, to give the fifth-generation LS a stretched, ground-hugging appearance.

Compared with the outgoing LS, the new model is approximately 15 mm lower, while the bonnet and boot are approximately 30 mm and 40 mm lower respectively.

Following the "Yet" philosophy that has been passed on since the first-generation model, Lexus created a design offering the room and comfort of a prestige "three-box" sedan, yet with the more striking silhouette that holds stronger appeal for many of today's luxury customers.

The new LS is the first Lexus sedan with a six-window profile, for excellent outward visibility. It is also the first Lexus sedan with wind-cheating flush-surface windows that smoothly integrate with the side pillar.

Spindle Mesh Grille

Focus of the new Lexus LS front mask is a unique rendition of the spindle grille mesh, with a texture that seemingly changes depending on the light.

It is the result of both intense CAD development and hand-adjusting thousands of individual surfaces.

Flanking the unique grille, the narrow slit-like 3-projector lamp merges with an L-shaped LED lamp that wraps broadly around to the side to give the front of the LS a resolute gaze.

The coupe-like silhouette is not due solely to the fastback roof style. Maximising the GA-L platform's low form, the pillars of the cabin taper from the central position of the occupants.

Together with the contrast between the pulled-in doors and the front and rear fenders that flare away from the central position of the occupants, this creates a dynamic form.

A front-to-rear shoulder line gives the vehicle's basic posture a low stance with a horizontal axis and a bold appearance. Additionally, the axes of the dramatically flared front and rear fenders are slanted forwards, creating a dynamic impression that evokes driving performance.

Special attention was paid to aerodynamics, to optimise both fuel economy and high-speed stability, with a Cd of 0.28 for LS 500h and 0.29 for LS 500.

Key aerodynamic features include front and rear bumper shapes, front pillar and wheel shapes, rear-end and air-kick shape, and exterior mirror and door handle shapes. Flush side window glass, a thin LED high-mount shape stop lamp and aero stabilising fins enhance upper-body aerodynamics.

Underneath, LS has a flat under body that gradually tapers from the front to the rear of the vehicle, as well as air-flow regulating fins, vertical fins under the rear of the vehicle, under-floor under covers and clam-shell mufflers.

On all 2018 LS models, an outer slide-type moon roof preserves headroom with the lower roofline.

The 2018 LS debuts new 20-inch wheel designs for both F Sport and Sports Luxury variants.

The 20-inch premium wheels employ a brilliant appearance created using a PVD technique known as sputtering.

The Sports Luxury wheel design features a hollow-rim structure that helps reduce resonant sounds generated by the tyres.

Tradition Inspires Progressive Interior Design

The new Lexus LS interior design provides a driver-focused cockpit and the ultimate relaxing interior.

Using the concept of progressive design, Lexus sought to give the new LS a luxury cabin that welcomes and envelops occupants.

"I hope that when you open the door you'll experience an immediate, intuitive sense that you're looking at an interior that is unlike any luxury car before," said chief designer Koichi Suga.

Elements such as fine leather, precise stitch work and detailed metal and wood accents add to the welcoming ambience with a range of eye and touch-pleasing textures and surfaces.

The new cabin is more spacious as well as more luxurious, thanks to the new LS platform, with its longer wheelbase. Cabin length has been increased to 2145mm and couple distance to 1080mm. Rear leg room in the Sports Luxury models has been increased by 86.3mm to 989mm.

The organically-shaped dash design clusters information displays at a uniform height to support the "seat-in-control" layout that emphasises the driver's ability to operate all systems without changing body posture.

Directly in front of the driver, the combination meter is set in a stitched-leather frame, with the Optitron display giving the appearance of a physical metal bezel.

At the driver's left is the next-generation Remote Touch Interface, designed to mimic smartphone operation and supporting handwritten input.

In addition to its 12.3-inch wide navigation display and 8-inch TFT multi-information screen, the new LS has a 600mm colour head-up display (HUD) - the largest in the class - that projects a variety of information onto the driver's forward view as if it were three metres in front of the eyes.

The new three-spoke steering wheel is 10mm smaller in diameter than the current model, with a varied profile for ideal grip. Sports Luxury has a fully heated wheel with wood inserts. F Sport has the same grip profile as Lexus LC coupe.

Cabin couture

The new Australian-specification LS has a choice of four interior colour schemes in Sports Luxury grade, plus three for the F Sport. In addition, seven choices in ornamentation are available, including the exclusive Naguri-style aluminium for the F Sport models.

Nearly all elements of the LS cabin are upholstery-wrapped, and a high level of craftsmanship has been applied even to the finer details, resulting in an elegant finish with a sense of depth.

For example, the higher-grade seats feature quilting, and the perforation pattern on the F Sport front seats has the same L-shaped mesh pattern as the car's front grille.

The available L-aniline leather is the brand's most luxurious leather ever. It is made using only the top one per cent of carefully selected North American hides, which are tanned by a special process to produce material that is 30 per cent softer than semi-aniline leather.

The F Sport interior trim colours are F Sport Moon White, F Sport Black and Flare Red, a new LS sports-positioned colour. Sports Luxury is offered with Sports Luxury Moon White, Black, Crimson Fire and Chestnut, which is exclusively available with L-aniline trim.

F Sport exclusively has Naguri-style aluminium ornamentation, which combines the traditional Japanese Naguri craving technique with lightweight aluminium for a refined sports appearance.

Sports Luxury's new interior ornamentation choices include Crafted Latte, Herringbone and Laser Cut feature bolder contrasts between light and dark, giving the wood a more vibrant appearance.

Crafted Latte was inspired by a "blazing fire", and took more than a year to create. By layering the wood and applying a natural gloss coating to enhance the vibrancy of the grain, the resulting pattern gives the impression of a flickering flame.

Herringbone features wood mosaic craftsmanship similar to that used for decorating musical instruments. Natural wood pieces are individually handcrafted by a Takumi craftsperson to create a delicate, Lexus-original mosaic, with an L-motif pattern subtly blended into the herringbone design.

Sports Luxury is also offered with Kiriko Glass, Tinted Redgrain and Walnut ornamentation.

LEXUS LS: TAKUMI CRAFTSMANSHIP


The premium-quality finishes and manufacturing processes employed to create Lexus LS combine the best traditions of Japanese culture and aesthetics with contemporary design and advanced technologies.

This is reflected in signature touches, such as elegant interior ambient lighting inspired by Japanese Andon lanterns and armrests that appear to float next to the door panel.

Central to achieving this exceptional build quality in every Lexus are the skills of its master craftspeople - the famous Takumi. They are responsible for ensuring Lexus' required quality levels are achieved at every stage in the car-making process.
This group came to the fore when producing the hand-crafted LFA supercar, developing special skills in areas such as carbon-fibre components and hand finishing.

Their experience and precision approach, not just in the intricate details of its fittings and finishes but also in the way a car rides and performs, was then used to ensure the highest quality levels in the LC sports coupe.

They performed the precise stitching of the LC leather across complex surfaces, the draping effect of the Alcantara in its door panels, the arrangement of the perforations in the leather seat upholstery and produced the LC steering wheel, with its highly complex cross-section design.

Their skills dovetail with chief designer Koichi Suga's vision for LS of drawing on traditional Japanese artforms, such as Kiriko glass making and Origami.

"As a Japanese luxury brand, we wanted to integrate elements of Japanese culture and the timeless appeal of Japanese craftsmanship to express the artistic side of Lexus."

Kiriko Glass Panels

Kiriko cut-glass ornamentation and hand-folded pleats (optional on the Sports Luxury grade) on the door trim perfectly illustrate the brand's "Innovative elegance through Japanese craftsmanship" and exemplify a true handcrafted approach.

The striking cut-glass ornamentation - a world first in a production vehicle - draws inspiration from Japanese Kiriko glassware. Traditional Kiriko patterns are created using a technique that involves hand-cutting clear colours and delicate lines in a piece of glass, which are then repeatedly polished to a soft glow.

For the new LS, Kiriko master craftsmen worked closely with Lexus designers and engineers to duplicate the hand-carved appearance of Kiriko cut-glass using leading-edge laser data copying and polishing technology. The look of the cut-glass pattern ornamentation has been adopted for the display zone in front of the passenger seat.

The hand-pleated upholstery is produced using a process that took four years to develop, and that can be done only by human hands. A single cloth sheet is folded like origami paper, each fold carefully overlapped with the next, creating a dramatic pleated effect. The effect of the light and the three-dimensional upholstery creates an elegant space.

Just 12 Takumi at Lexus' giant Kyushu factory are responsible for the detailed accuracy of every stitch in the new LS.

Hand-pleated door panels

Lexus employs the ancient Japanese art of Origami paper folding to add an eye and touch-pleasing three-dimension pattern to the new LS door panels.

A colour designer and a fabric artisan produced Hand Pleats, a new fabric-pleating technique which took four years to develop and can only be carried out by the human hand.

It mirrors the work of the finest Origami artist, who expertly fold individual sheets of fabric.

The finished panel changes in appearance according to the time of day and cabin illumination, adding to the elegance and enveloping quality of the interior.

Art Wood

Lexus Takumi craftsmen also produce art wood for the LS interior, applying new ways of working with wood veneers to produce unique designs.

These art wood finishes fuse the natural beauty of timber with Lexus' brave design.
Art Wood Organic requires a precise layering technique and a natural gloss coating to bring out vibrant, contrasting flame-like grain patterns.

For Art Wood Herringbone, the Takumi use craft techniques from the world of fine musical instruments, hand grafting small pieces of wood to create delicate symmetrical patterns.

A third interpretation, Laser Cut Special, uses laser technology to cut through the veneer to expose a sub-layer of metal. This creates a pattern inspired by the way the Lexus L-motif is worked into LS' spindle grille.

LEXUS LS: OMOTENASHI PRINCIPLES INSPIRED NEW LEXUS LS


Lexus' quest to create new standards of luxury in flagship LS have embraced the traditional Japanese hospitality principles of Omotenashi, delivering a car that cares for its occupants and anticipate their needs.

Lexus looked beyond the vehicle's features and technology, to deliver a kind of progressive luxury that welcomes occupants and enables the driver to feel perfectly connected with the vehicle.

The Omotenashi influence begins with the "welcome" sequence" as the driver approaches the vehicle. Inside the car, there is a meticulous attention to detail to provide the most comfortable, safe and relaxing environment for all occupants, whether taking the wheel or being chauffeured as a passenger.

Welcoming Sequence

The welcoming sequence includes a premium access function in LS' new-generation air suspension and cabin illumination inspired by the soft glow of traditional Japanese Andon lanterns. Light sources located behind the trim panels and armrest provide direct, downward illumination that adds to LS' sense of spaciousness.

The access mode automatically raises the low-slung sedan by 40mm to an ideal 555mm hip height in just four seconds when the vehicle is unlocked. Once the occupants are on board and the engine switched on, the car returns to its regular ride height.

The same convenient height adjustment is made when the car is stopped and a door opened for someone to exit.

In addition, the car prepares for the arrival of the driver and front-seat passenger by extending the seatbelt buckle 50mm when the front doors are opened, ready for use. The driver's seatbelt buckle rises when the engine is switched off, to make for easier unbuckling.

Further to the welcoming sequence, the driver's outer cushion bolster opens out when the car is unlocked and then automatically returns to the normal supportive position when the driver is seated.

The driver's seat automatically rises and moves rearwards to make it easier to exit the vehicle; similarly, it returns to the previous driving position when the driver is seated.

Seating Design

Lexus paid special attention to the LS seat designs, as a defining factor in the Omotenashi qualities of the car.

It followed two design philosophies, to suit those who want to drive the car and those who will be chauffeured in the rear seat.

The front seats have been completely redesigned, with 28-way power adjustment compared with 16-way on the current model.

Combining electric motors with a new pneumatic control system allows fine adjustment of the entire seat with minimal weight and bulk, while allowing for heating and massage functions to be included.

The level of adjustment is the best in segment, with new controls to tailor support for the back, pelvis and hips.

The new design provides excellent side holding, pelvis stability and shoulder support, and allows people of all body sizes and types to find their ideal position at the wheel.

In a world first, the front seats offer support behind the hips, were a gap tends to develop between the occupant and the seat - thereby helping keep the pelvis stable while cornering.

A special feature links seatback operation to the pre-collision system, so the seatback moves into an upright position if the PCS determines a collision is likely.

Built on a new frame, the front seats are stronger and more rigid. A high-tensile steel side frame helps keep seat weight to 6kg.

Rear-seat Comfort

Lexus LS Sports Luxury has breakthrough rear-seat features, including a Shiatsu massage function and world-first warming function with spot heaters.

Sport Luxury's rear seat has best-in-class 22-way adjustment, including back, hip and pelvis support and ottoman extension.

The angle of rear-seat recline is a class-leading 48 degrees, thanks to innovative packaging and a redesigned reclining mechanism.

A multi-function touch screen in the rear centre armrest precisely controls a multitude of functions - the rear seats, audio, climate, interior lighting and sunshade.

The front passenger seat and entertainment monitor are also automatically adjusted to suit the chosen configuration.

The ottoman seat in Sports Luxury has three pre-set positions: business, which is the default; entertain, which reclines the seat for comfortable viewing of the entertainment monitor, and relax, which extends the leg ottoman, deadly reclines the seatback and moves the front passenger seat to its furthest forward position.

This provides maximum legroom of 1022mm, an increase of 86mm over the current model.

The seat automatically returns to the default position when the car stops and the rear door is opened, allowing for an easy and comfortable exit.

Shiatsu Massage

Lexus has included Shiatsu massage functions in the front and rear seats of new LS, as well as a world-first rear-seat spot-heating function.

The LS design team consulted Japanese massage experts to design the new systems, to ensure the correct degree of thumb-like pressure is applied in right places to help the occupant relax.

The relaxation seats use air bladders integrated into the seatback and seat cushion.

These are inflated to strategically apply pressure to the occupant's body.

Five separate front-seat massage courses can be selected using the multi-information display, working with a centripetal or centrifugal action, or focusing on the lumbar, upper and lower-back regions.

This promotes driver relaxing without impairing control of the car.

The improved rear-seat massage function has an expanded operating area that covers the occupant's thighs as well as the back.

In a world-first, spot heaters have been integrated into the rear seat to target heat stimulation on the shoulders and lower back - in conjunction with the Shiatsu massage. They are designed to warm specific areas without warming a person's entire body.

Rear-seat occupants can select from three full-body programs ("Refresh", "Stretch" and "Simple") and four that target specific areas - upper body, lower body, shoulder and lumbar.

Climate Control

The new Lexus LS offers the highest levels of climate-control comfort from a more space-efficient heating and ventilation system.

Increasing the HVAC system package efficient contributes to the lower bonnet line and lower centre of gravity of new LS.

The separate rear air-conditioning system is also more compact, thereby optimising boot space.

The new configuration and positioning of the rear vents allows for a lower roof line and optimum climate control performance.

Climate Concierge

Lexus climate concierge has an upgraded infra-red matrix sensor, to monitor the body temperature of all the vehicle's occupants.

The number of monitoring zones has been increased from six to 16, for more complete coverage and hence finer control of heating and cooling - with allowance for factors such as low-level sunlight through the windows.

As well as the air conditioning, Climate Concierge controls heat heating and ventilation and the heated steering wheel, to maintain a comfortable environment for each person on board.

Control of LS's four-zone climate control is via the multi-information display, with additional controls in the rear seat console.

Sound System

The new LS has the finest-quality 23-speaker 3D Mark Levinson QLI Reference Surround Sound audio system, which is unique to Lexus' most exclusive models.
It was designed in cooperation with Lexus engineers to complement the interior architecture of each vehicle and developed as the company's benchmark sound system for the next ten years.

The 23 speakers are positioned in 16 locations around the cabin, using a 16-channel Mark Levinson reference amplifier.

QLI (quantum logic immersion) technology has been adopted, to allow for more precise tuning, creating naturally all-enveloping sounds and precise sound-source playback.

QLI technology separates the audio sources into individual streams - vocals, instruments and spatial sound information - similar to the original arrangement.
These audio streams are then mixed to recreate a full, three-dimensional sonic environment.

The combination of QLI and ClariFi technology helps deliver premium-quality sound reproduction.

Sports Luxury models feature a rear-seat entertainment system with 11.6-inch LCD screens in the front seat backs and Blu-ray Disc player in the rear end of the centre console. The rear centre armrest has a multi-operation panel, HDMI port and head-phone sockets.

In addition to its premium sound system, Lexus LS 500 and LS 500h have active noise control, to detect when engine noise enters the cabin and cancel out certain frequencies using anti-phase sound from the audio speakers.

Sports Luxury LS 500 and LS 500h have noise-reduction alloy wheels, which have a hollow rim section with resonator hole to help reduce air resonance generated by the tyres.

Hands-Free Power Boot Lid

The new LS has a hands-free power-operated boot lid, for added convenience.

The boot can be opened or closed using a kick-sensor beneath the rear bumper, thereby leaving the hands free when carrying luggage and keeping the hands clear of the vehicle's paint work.

The user only needs to stand within the smart key sensor range and pass their foot below the edge of the bumper.

LEXUS LS: IMAGINATIVE TECHNOLOGY BOOSTS LEXUS LS SAFETY


Lexus has developed imaginative technology to optimise the safety of the all-new LS sedan.

Central to developing safety features for the fifth-generation LS was the Integrated Safety Management Concept, which focuses on analysing and optimising safety technologies for the main causes of traffic fatalities: accidents related to pedestrians, vehicle departures from roads and rear-end collisions.

"The LS is designed to be the top runner in advanced safety technologies," said Lexus LS chief engineer Toshio Asahi.

All four LS model variants have Lexus Safety System+, a collection of active safety features that can help the driver avoid an accident or help lessen the consequences of a collision.

The system uses a windscreen-mounted camera and a grille-mounted millimetre-wave radar to monitor the road ahead for potential hazards and collision risks.

This provides the LS with a Pre-Collision System (PCS) (designed to detect vehicles and pedestrians), All-speed Radar Active Cruise Control (ACC), Lane-Keep Assist (LKA) with Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and a Sway Warning function, and Adaptive High-beam System (AHS).*

Pre-Collision Safety System

Designed to detect the risk of an impact and operating in unison with warning and braking systems, the Pre-Collision System helps to lessen the damage sustained in a collision.

The system is designed to recognise other vehicles using data from a forward recognition camera and the radar sensor.

If it determines that the possibility of a collision is high, pre-collision warning control and pre-collision brake assist control are initiated. If a collision is imminent, pre-collision braking control will be engaged -to help reduce the impact of the collision or help avoid it.

If the driver fails to react and the system judges a collision to be imminent, the brakes are automatically applied to reduce vehicle speed by up to 40km/h, which could potentially bring the car to a stop in order to help mitigate the force of an impact.

All-speed Radar Active Cruise Control

The same radar unit used by the PCS provides the LS with All-speed Radar Active Cruise Control (ACC). This helps the driver maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, down to very low speeds and even to a standstill.

Once the way ahead is clear, the LS automatically and smoothly accelerates to its pre-set cruising speed. If the car has been brought to a halt, the driver simply needs to press the accelerator briefly to reactivate the system.

Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning & Vehicle Sway Warning

Lexus' advanced Lane Keep Assist is designed to recognise when the vehicle is deviating from its lane.

It helps the driver steer the vehicle safely back to its correct path, automatically providing steering inputs to keep the car within its lane.

Working with the ACC, it can operate even at very low vehicle speeds. The driver can also choose the alert system (warning sound or vibrating steering wheel) and the sensitivity of the warning, via the multi-information display. The system can also be switched off if desired.

Lane Departure Warning (LDW) uses a camera on the windscreen to track the vehicle's course between lane markings painted on the road surface. If it judges that the vehicle is about to move out of its lane without the indicator being used, the system lights an indicator on the multi-information display and sounds the warning buzzer. It will also apply appropriate steering control force to help bring the vehicle back on course.

The system also includes a Vehicle Sway Warning function. This monitors the car's position in its lane and the driver's steering inputs. If it detects degrees of vehicle swaying, it will sound an alert and display a warning on the multi-information display, recommending the driver takes a break.

Two-stage Adaptive High-beam System

The two-stage Adaptive High-beam System (AHS) provides automatic switching of LS's Bi-LED headlamps for low and high beam.

LS has eight LED lights at the top and 16 below (on each side) and the AHS provides optimal lighting through separate on/off control of each row of LEDs, enabling finer control of light strength and distance compared with the current LED-based AHS.

It allows for greater use of high-beam driving without blinding preceding or oncoming vehicles, thus improving night-time visibility.

Additionally, new LS has multi-weather lamps, to reduce the glare experienced by the driver when light is projected forward while driving in fog at night and still provide sufficient light in front of the vehicle.

The low-beam focal aim is lowered by a tenth of a degree to keep projected light from scattering and the cornering lamps are turned on at 70 per cent light distribution to illuminate the area directly in front of the vehicle.

Additional Technologies


Panoramic View Monitor

Lexus has added side clearance view and cornering view functions to the Panoramic View Monitor system, which supports periphery safety checks.

Side-clearance view produces an image on the LS's 12.3-inch display monitor, as if it were seen from an elevated point at the rear of the car. This allows the driver to more-intuitively confirm the space on the sides of the vehicle when passing by another vehicle on a narrow road or when moving toward the shoulder of the road to allow passage.

When side-clearance view is in operation, cornering view automatically produces an image of the vehicle as viewed from the rear - at an angle in line with driving operation during cornering. This assists in confirming safety when making left or right turns on narrow roads and in preventing driving up onto the gutter when exiting the road.

Parking Support Alert (PKSA)

This Lexus-first system features on all LS models and combines three parking assist functions:

1. Clearance Sonar
2. Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)
3. Rear Camera Detection (a Lexus first)

The system detects obstacles around the vehicle, vehicles approaching from the rear or pedestrians behind the vehicle, and alerts the driver with a display indicator and buzzer. The system operates at low speeds and with a wide coverage area around the vehicle.

a) Clearance Sonar
The system detects static objects and alerts the driver with a buzzer and display indicator in the centre display and HUD (Head-up Display) or the multi-information display.

In a Lexus first, the clearance sonar displays the direction and distance from the vehicle to an obstacle. The colour of the lines changes depending on the distance to obstacle.

b) RCTA
This Rear Cross Traffic Alert system detects vehicles approaching from the side at the rear, alerting the driver with a buzzer, linked display on the centre display and an indicator on the outer mirror.

c) PKSA Rear Camera Detection
The Rear Camera Detection system, which is new to Lexus, uses both a rear camera and a rear-mounted radar to detect pedestrians. It alerts the driver with an indicator in the centre display, as well as a buzzer.

Imaginative Technology - Convenience


Improved Lexus Remote Touch Interface

The new LS has a more user friendly cabin features, to increase convenience and hence optimise attention on the road ahead.

Improvements include a new-generation Lexus Remote Touch, with operations more akin to those of a smart-phone.

It offers improved interface, smoother tracing and more refined visual appeal. A new, frameless, smooth-touch pad gives a smoother feel and reduces the appearance of finger prints.

Touch-pad dimensions have been increased to 65mm by 62mm and the pad is now frameless, with a smoother surface to improve feel and reduce the appearance of finger prints.

The frameless design means there are no height variations to the edge of the pad, while the enlarged detection area enables clean finger operation all the way to the edge of the pad, providing greater ease of use for operations such as pinch-in and pinch-out of maps.

A Remote Touch sub switch has been adopted to call up an operation screen, with related functions for each screen such as air conditioning and navigation.

The adoption of vibration feedback control further increases user friendliness. It uses touch-pad vibration to notify the user when the cursor is moved and a different button is selected, making it easier to align the cursor with the desired button.

Multi-Media Upgrades

The Lexus LS audio system features improved user interface and improved multi-media features, as well as a new 12.3-inch display screen.

In a Lexus first, the audio switch knob incorporates the volume and tune functions.

A pop-up short-cut function for mobile telephone operations gives easy access to frequently used functions, by aligning the cursor with Phone on the menu screen so favourite or history items can be selected and accessed directly.

A high frame rate of 30 frames per second for the main display enhances useability and readability.

Key features of the new multi-media package include satellite navigation with SUNA live traffic, AM/FM tuner, Digital Radio with Phase Driver, CD/DVD player, two USB inputs (including iPod control, audio and video file playback), Micro SD audio file playback, AUX input, Bluetooth for phone and music, voice recognition, mobile assistant, SMS read out, Miracast and Lexus Enform (the last four features named require compatible smart-phone).

LEXUS LS: EXHILARATING PERFORMANCE


Lexus has completely redesigned the underpinnings of flagship LS sedan and developed all-new chassis electronics, to enhance handling agility, ride comfort, safety and cabin quietness.

Special attention was paid to achieving a flat cornering stance, with minimal body roll and fore/aft pitching.

The new-generation Lexus GA-L platform provides the foundation for the new chassis hardware and calibration, delivering greater rigidity, a larger footprint on the road, the lowest centre of gravity in the segment and 52/48 fore/aft weight distribution.

The GA-L platform is the stiffest in Lexus history, while increasing the LS wheelbase by 35mm over previous long-wheelbase model and lowering the CoG to 543mm above the road.

Helping give new LS its impressive ride and handling balance is the latest iteration of Lexus' chassis-control technology Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM), which was first introduced in 2005.

This system implements cooperative control of all available vehicle sub-systems - ABS, Traction Control (TRC), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Electric Power Steering (EPS), the air-suspension system and Adaptive Variable Suspension.

On F Sport models, the VDIM also controls the Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) and Dynamic Rear Steering (DRS), while on LS 500 F Sport it additionally controls the active stabiliser bars.

LS 500 F Sport's VDIM therefore has the world-first feature of controlling six types of movement - longitudinal, vertical, lateral, yaw, roll and pitch.

New Design, New Materials

The GA-L vehicle architecture that underpins the LS is the result of a completely new approach to the engineering, materials and loads of the vehicle structure.

Rather than starting from the existing vehicle platform and modifying it to suit the new body shape and strengthen it to support contemporary chassis dynamics, Lexus engineers started with a clean sheet of paper - a blank CAD screen - in designing the new structure.

Examples of this can be easily seen under the bonnet, where new cast-aluminium suspension towers that support the upper spring seats and suspension mounts are visible above each front wheel.

Since aluminium and steel cannot be welded together with conventional techniques, the joint attaching the aluminium tower casting to the steel body structure is made with self-piercing rivets and high-strength adhesive bonding.

Similar processes are used to secure the aluminium rear suspension towers to the body structure behind the back seats. Compared with structures and capabilities made from steel, this technology is 42 per cent lighter at the front. In the rear, the aluminium structure has 1.5 times the rigidity of steel with 50 per cent less weight.

Critical to its driving performance, the new platform lowers the vehicle's centre of gravity by placing most of its mass, including the engine and the occupants, in positions more centralised and lower in the chassis.

Special braces in the engine compartment, stiff aluminium front and rear suspension towers and other features help bolster the strength of key chassis structures.

Stronger Upper Body

Complementing the new LS platform, the upper body has a raft of design, material and manufacturing innovations that combine to optimise rigidity, durability and crash worthiness, and minimise NVH.

Lexus body design engineers specified lightweight materials including aluminium and ultra-high tensile hot stamped steel and other steel alloys with tensile strengths from 590 up to 1180 MPa in key areas.

In fact, the 2018 LS has a high-tensile steel mass composition of nearly 30 per cent - more than double that of the previous-generation LS (14.1 percent). This provides an optimum balance of rigidity versus weight for the new LS platform and combines with the new twin-turbo engine to deliver a more dynamic driving experience.

Key features of the new body frame include designing the cowl-side outer without service holes and joining the rear partition panel to the rear-floor cross member to suppress deformation around the rear suspension towers. An annular frame structure combined with hot press/high-tension material for the door frames increases door-frame rigidity.

High rigidity features in the upper body design also include a lower-back cross member and rear side members that are connected by a rear gusset, and a rear-housing inner brace behind the rear combination lamps.

A new frame section has been added at the rear quarter pillar, to disperse inputs from the rear suspension to the rear quarter pillar and rear pillar.

Additional spot welds strengthen the LS body panel joints, while high-rigidity urethane sealant is used to attach the windscreen glass and rear-window glass.

A combination of special body adhesive and the use of Laser Screw Welding, a proprietary laser welding process proven on other recent Lexus models, increases panel joint rigidity and gives the LS a feeling of exceptional strength and solidity.

Weight-saving innovations include pressing the bonnet, front fenders, front and rear door skins and boot lid from aluminium sheet, for a 25kg weight reduction compared with the current LS model.

NVH counter-measures include a bonnet silencer, urethane sound insulating panel inside the fenders, acoustic front, rear and quarter glass, and damping sheet with high vibration-damping performance on the outer door panels.

Double Ball-Joint Suspension:

Lexus created a refined multi-link front suspension with double ball joints, to optimise handling, steering and ride comfort in new LS.

The Lexus flagship model has long set benchmarks for suspension compliance, yet even here Lexus saw opportunity for further gains.

Double ball joints on the upper and lower control arms help allow for control of the smallest movements from the driver inputs and road conditions. This unique dual-ball joint arrangement optimises suspension geometry to increase wheel control and yield more precise steering response from the moment the steering wheel is turned, as well as reducing tyre-angle change when turning.

The new design also allows for a low bonnet line and a large diameter wheel/tyre envelope.

The new multi-link rear suspension was designed for optimum ride comfort and stability.

Key features include locating the toe-control arm at the rear of the suspension, to control the direction of the tyre relative to the lateral force when turning and hence enhance stability.

World-first ball-joint stud type cantilever bushings have been adopted for the upper and lower number one axle-carrier side joints, to further enhance ride quality and comfort.

Aluminium is used extensively throughout the new LS suspension to reduce unsprung weight and aid agility and comfort, including forged aluminium for the upper and lower front arms, and the rear axle carriers.

As with the previous LS, the all-new model offers an air suspension system that further refines the ride quality.

The new LS air suspension includes a Lexus-first access mode, which raises the vehicle by 30mm for vehicle entry and by 10mm for vehicle exit.
The latest air suspension iteration also adds a high-speed sensitive function, to lower the vehicle at high speed. These new features are in addition to the existing features of auto levelling and height selection.

A new, more advanced version of Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) continually adjusts damping control in response to driving operations and road surface conditions. "Continually" is the key word, because Lexus increased the damping-force switching levels from the previous model's nine to 650 in the 2018 LS. The result is faster, more seamless and refined operation.

The new AVS system effectively provides both shock isolation and a flat ride, even on road surfaces with large undulations as well as small, rough areas.

The result is enhanced steering response and stability along with greater ride comfort.

As a real-world example, when driving an AVS-equipped 2018 LS in an urban setting over a rough surface, the system can increase ride comfort without excessively increasing damping force.

Yet, when the steering wheel is turned, damping force increases to suppress unwanted weight transfer and preserve a flat cornering stance.

Improved Steering

Lexus LS has a new electric power-assisted steering system, designed to complement the new front suspension and provide improved feedback from the road to the steering wheel.

The new system has a rack-parallel type steering box, with the motor-control unit and reduction gear on the steering rack. The electric tilt-adjustment for the steering column is now lower-pivot tyre, offering 50mm of tilt range and 60mm of reach adjustment.

The VGRS actuator on F Sport models has been relocated closer to the steering wheel, above the intermediate shaft.

F Sport models have the Lexus Dynamic Handling System, consisting of variable gear-ratio steering and dynamic rear steering.

This system is designed to enhance manoeuvrability at low speed, with a 25 per cent reduction in steering input to perform a U-turn and 20cm reduction in turning radius compared with the two-wheel steer models.

The medium-speed objective was high yaw response, so LS F Sport reacts quickly to driver intention in situations where there are many corners, such as urban areas, mountain roads and racing circuits.

At high speed, the system delivers peace of mind, with stabilised vehicle body slip during high-speed cornering to ensure greater driving confidence.

New Brake Package

Lexus has developed new brake packages for the LS F Sport and Sports luxury grades - both with ventilated brake rotors and high-rigidity aluminium monobloc calipers.

F Sport has 400mm by 36mm front discs with six-piston opposed calipers, 359mm by 30mm rear discs with four-piston opposed calipers and high-friction brake pads.

Sports Luxury models have 357mm x 34mm front discs and 335 by 25mm at the rear, with four-piston opposed front calipers and two-piston opposed rear calipers.

LS 500h have the added feature of regenerative braking, where the electric drive motor acts as a generator to slow the vehicle and convert kinetic to electrical energy, which can be stored for later use in the lithium-ion battery.

The parking brake is push-button electrically operated.

All four LS model variants have a full electronically controlled braking system, consisting of ABS, EBD, Brake Assist, Hill-start Assist Control, Brake Hold, Emergency Brake Signal, secondary collision mitigation brake, VDIM, traction control and vehicle stability control.

New Powertrains

Lexus has created a completely new twin-turbo V6 engine to give flagship LS 500 exhilarating performance.

The 60-degree 3.5-litre V6 engine is the first turbocharged petrol engine in the Lexus sedan range.

It was specifically developed for the new LS 500 and is matched to the first ten-speed transmission offered in a premium passenger car, to provide seamless acceleration and excellent fuel efficiency.

This new power plant has under-square bore and stroke dimensions for improved thermal efficiency and to suit turbocharged operation. Its combustion chamber design has benefited from the company's Formula One technology.

This new LS engine is indicative of a more dynamic Lexus pathway, offering V8-level power in a more compact package, with optimum efficiency and refinement.

With 310kW of power at 6000rpm and 600Nm of torque from 1600-4800rpm, it provides the performance level expected of a brand flagship. These figures represent significant gains over the outgoing LS model's naturally aspirated 4.6-litre V8 (285kW and 493Nm).

Fuel economy has been improved by 11 per cent compared with LS 460. The new engine has the Lexus Stop & Start System, to save fuel when the vehicle is stationary.

A purpose-developed Lexus-first version of the variable valve timing-intelligent with electric motor (VVT-iE) optimises both package efficiency and ease of engine re-starting, while also allowing the engine to operate on the Atkinson or Otto cycles according to driving conditions.

The engine's optimised under-square bore-to-stroke ratio, increased valve angle, straight intake ports and laser-clad intake valve seats were developed using performance simulations based on F1 technology. They combine to yield high-speed combustion and world top-class thermal efficiency.

The twin turbochargers were designed and produced in-house to control tolerances and quality. They achieve top-level mechanical efficiency by improving exhaust energy recovery using a curved turbine blade shape and increased blade length, along with die-cast compressor housings and improved surface precision.

Electric waste gates provide ultra-precise turbo boost control for seamless, lag-free power build-up.

The twin intercoolers are cooled by engine coolant for higher performance and efficiency. They are mounted on top of the engine, each in a direct path between its turbocharger and intake throttle, to reduce intake-tract volume and hence throttle lag.

A special version of Lexus' D 4S direct injection plus port injection system was developed to improve injection control when linked to turbocharger operation.

Called D 4ST, this system controls new six-hole direct injectors and the port fuel injectors - to take advantage of the turbochargers and the high tumble ratio of the combustion chambers.

Remarkable powertrain smoothness, a Lexus hallmark, begins deep inside the cylinder block, where a ladder frame supports the crankshaft main bearings for high rigidity and low vibration. Redesigned engine mounts, electric waste gates and numerous other features also contribute to the engine's ultra-smooth characteristics.

The new LS 500 achieves a 0-100km/h time of five seconds. Perhaps more critical to driving enjoyment though is how Lexus tuned the engine and transmission to deliver instant acceleration and a constant build-up of torque toward the engine's redline.

The driver can use Drive Mode Select to tailor powertrain response and feel, by choosing from Eco, Normal, Sport S or Sport S+ modes. Just enough of the exhaust note can be heard to enhance the sporty feel.

Formula One Technology Boosts Turbo Engine Performance

The new 3.5-litre twin-turbo engine in Lexus LS 500 features laser-cladding technology pioneered in Formula One, world rallying and world endurance racing.
Designers of the new Lexus V35A-FTS engine drew on the corporation's wide-ranging competition technology to optimise performance and durability.

The new engine has laser-clad intake valve seats, bespoke intake ports and high-tumble-ratio combustion chambers.

The laser-clad intake valve seats are produced in a propriety process where a precisely controlled laser beam focuses on a stream of fine particles of powdered steel alloy, binding them directly to the cylinder head.

This means the valve and valve seat can be more than 1mm larger in diameter than a pressed-in valve seat in a similarly sized port.

The laser-clad valve seats and larger valve diameter improve the twin-turbo engine in four ways:

Freedom for a radical redesign of the intake port, increasing air-flow volume for increased power
Reduced mass of steel in the valve seat, thereby improving heat release from the valve into the cylinder head in the (brief) periods when the valve is closed
Reduced mass of the alloy cylinder-head casting behind the valve seat, thereby improving coolant flow and lowering the operating temperatures at the critical valve face and valve stem by up to 50 degrees C; this increases valve durability by a factor of three compared with an engine with conventional pressed-in valve seats
Allows for up to 8 degrees more ignition advance while operating below the knock limit (detonation border line), thereby delivering more power at efficiently lean air-fuel mixtures.

10-Speed Transmission

Lexus LS 500 has the first-ever 10-speed automatic transmission for a premium passenger car.

This torque-converter automatic debuted in the Lexus LC 500 and is now also used in the new LS 500. It offers shift times that rival those of dual-clutch transmissions.

The flexibility afforded by 10 closely spaced ratios is ideal for all driving situations.

Using aluminium for the clutch drum, clutch hub and planetary carrier reduces rotating mass. Coupled with shortened internal oil passages and smaller, faster-acting shift solenoids, this transmission results in quicker shifts.

These improvements, coupled with a resin-plastic transmission oil pan, yield a 10-speed transmission weighing the same as the previous eight-speed gearbox.

The LS 500 features steering wheel shifter paddles. However, even drivers who might enjoy controlling gearshifts manually will be duly impressed by the automatic mode's advanced electronic control system. The artificial intelligence transmission logic (AI-Shift Control) anticipates the driver's input by monitoring acceleration, braking and lateral-g forces to execute ultra-fast shifts.

For starting acceleration, the close ratios of the low gears and the short shift times enable a rhythmical and exhilarating acceleration feel. The high torque of the twin-turbo engine matches ideally with the higher gear ratios for effortless, serene highway cruising, yet very quick downshifts yield direct acceleration with no lag in G response.

Torque converter lock activates in all ranges except for take-off, to provide a direct feel while also supporting fuel efficiency.

New LS Multi-Stage Hybrid

Lexus has also taken an entirely different power-train approach for the new LS hybrid, employing the Multi-Stage Hybrid System that debuted in the LC 500h coupe.

This system combines a naturally aspirated Atkinson-cycle 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with two electric motor/generators and uses a compact, lightweight lithium-ion battery for the first time in LS.

Fuel economy has been improved by 23 per cent compared with LS 600h.

D-4S direct fuel injection and lightweight valve train components allow a 6,600-rpm redline, with Dual Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence (Dual VVT-i) ensuring ample torque across the engine revolution range.

Combined system output of the internal combustion engine with the electric traction system is 264kW, enabling the LS 500h to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.4 seconds.

The new system is based on the electronically-controlled all-gear continuously variable transmission of Lexus Hybrid Synergy Drive, coupled to an all-new four-speed automatic gear set at the output stage.

The two systems work together to expand the overall range of gearing and harness the V6 engine across a wider speed range than previous hybrids.

In M mode, the two gear sets are controlled together to provide the effect of 10 ratios, giving the LS 500h a highly engaging driving feel and allowing the driver to shift through the ratios with paddle shifters.

The Multi Stage Hybrid System allows for more electric assistance at lower vehicle speeds, and it enables the LS 500h to operate with the petrol engine off for short distances at track speeds of up to 140km/h.
